Live The Life You Want To Live Now

Broken dreams can be painful, and living how you have to live can be frustrating and make you feel unhappy. It’s time for you to start living howtake back time you want to live, and feel fulfilled and happy.

I was in Portland Oregon, visiting my friend Mike. Despite the cold and cloudy day, we decided to drive to the beach. The fog had covered the coast, but we could still see some cliffs peeking through. The view was breathtaking. When we got to the beach, there was no one in sight. It didn’t look like it was going to rain, so we decided to sit by the ocean. The wind was blowing. Waves were slamming the shore, and mist was whipping our faces. We sat there for a while contemplating nature’s spectacular show.

Suddenly, we spotted a man walking far away, slowly heading towards us. When he got close, he stood in front of us and, without introducing himself, said, “When I was young, I had time and energy, but no money to do the things I dreamed of doing. When I was older, I had energy and money, but no time for my dream life. Now, I have money and time, but I no longer have the energy to live the life I once dreamed of.”

Mike and I stayed quiet, unsure of what to stay.

The man looked straight at us. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he continued, “All my life, I looked forward to my retirement to start living the life I wanted to live. I kept putting it off until later. One week after I retired, my wife passed away.”

He slowly turned his head and looked far into the ocean, then turned back to us and concluded, before he walked off, “Live the life you want to live now. Don’t wait until later because one day and before you know it, ‘later’ will be ‘too late’ …”

5 steps towards the life you want to live

Step #1: Identify what no longer makes you happy

Whether it concerns your relationship, family, friends, health, job, finances, or any other aspect of your life, use short and precise sentences to clearly identify what no longer serves you, helps you grow, makes you happy, and puts a smile on your face; what you no longer wish to do or be anymore; what you feel is limiting you and preventing you from going where you want to go, doing what you want to do, and being whom you want to be; what makes you feel untrue to yourself, giving you a choking feeling in your throat, pressure in your chest, or cramps in your stomach.

  • I clearly identify what no longer serves me or makes me happy.

Step #2: Make peace with what no longer makes you happy

Regardless of your life’s circumstances, of someone else’s or your own past decisions, choices, words, and actions, you are here today, enjoying one part of your life and despising another part. You are here: Do not resist or fight this reality. Do not waste any more precious time and energy complaining, regretting, or blaming something, someone else or yourself for it. Accept that you are here, make peace with it, and thank it for helping you grow into whom you are today. Start from here and take a step forward towards the life you want to live.

  • I make peace with what no longer makes me happy.

Step #3: Describe the life you want to live

Using short and precise sentences, clearly identify where you want to go, what you want to do, and whom you want to be; your neglected and recurrent ideas, projects, and dreams; what’s still missing that would add passion and happiness to your life; what makes you happy and puts a smile on your face when you simply think about it; what is something you’ve waited long enough to do; what is something you feel you will one day regret not having done.

  • I clearly identify what makes me happy and puts a smile on my face.

Step #4: Unload

If you feel that your life today is overwhelming and preventing you from living your dream life, it’s time to unload, even at the risk of losing something valuable such as money, belongings, securities, perfect results, or someone’s love and respect. It’s time to learn how to choose your battles, drop some of your million things to do, delegate, ask for assistance, and say no to something or someone’s request. When you unload, you make room for the life you want to live—your ideas, projects, dreams, and passions.

  • I unload and make room for the life I want to live

Step #5: Draw a roadmap

It is a map that will help you go from the life you have to live to the life you want to live. Research, consult reliable sources, and collect the appropriate information that will help you draw this map. Don’t hesitate to turn to someone knowledgeable on the subject for help if you need it, such as a friend or an expert in the field.

  • I draw the roadmap that will guide me to the life I want to live.

Set a date to take action and start living your dream life. Remember that even if you forget about your dreams, your dreams never forget about you.

Take your first step now. Don’t wait until later anymore because “one day and before you know it, ‘later’ will be ‘too late’ …
